HONG KONG: Genting Hong Kong’s Star Cruises, the leading cruise line in Asia-Pacific, has commissioned shipbuilder Meyer Werft of Germany to build a new €697.2mil (RM3.153bil) mega cruise ship, its second order in four months.
The 150,000-tonne vessel will bring Star Cruises’ Asian fleet to nine ships when it is delivered in the autumn of 2017.
The new vessel is meant to be a sister ship to the one Star Cruises ordered in October 2013 and to be delivered in fall of 2016. It will be approximately 330m in length and will be able to accommodate 3,305 passengers in lower berths in 1,682 cabins, with maximum capacity at over 4,500.
Top speed is expected be 24 knots.
Star Cruises said new ship would be designed to cater to the unique preferences of Asian cruisers and should enable the company to take advantage of the growing demand for cruise travel in the Asia-Pacific region.
Meyer Werft constructed Star Cruises’ first new ship, the SuperStar Leo, in 1998, and its sister ship SuperStar Virgo.
